When should you see an Orthodontist?
by Holland Park Dental Centre on Orthodontics, Braces and Children’s Dentistry
You can visit an orthodontist from at any age, as a child or as an adult. But, before all your child’s adult teeth are through is usually a bit too early. Most patients want to enhance the appearance of their teeth, while others are looking to improve their function. If there is a discrepancy between how your jaws come together removable braces as a teenager can improve the way your upper and lower teeth interact. It’s really helpful to use natural growth spurts when using bite correcting appliances like twin blocks, palatal expanders or URA’s. Fixing jaw discrepancies early can prevent the need for orthognathic jaw surgery.

Can Adults see an Orthodontist?
Orthodontists work with patients of all ages, not just children and teens. Braces have become incredibly popular among adults who may have missed their opportunity to have treatment sooner or that have had braces in the past and not worn their retainer.
Teeth can also become misaligned later in life as part of the natural ageing process. They tend to move forward and crowd together. Some patients think their wisdom teeth are to blame, but that’s rarely the case.
As the demand for braces has soared, appliances have become more effective and less conspicuous. Invisalign is an extremely popular treatment option. It aligns teeth using a series of clear, custom-made aligners. You can take them out to eat and drink, so it’s incredibly convenient for all ages.
Lingual braces are another discreet option, featuring cast-gold brackets that attach behind your teeth.
