Creating strong dental habits have benefits beyond those that are immediately obvious. We want to establish routines that protect our oral health throughout our entire life. At Holland Park Dental Centre, we believe that prevention is always better than cure, and the habits you form today can lead to years of healthy smiles tomorrow – and beyond!

Start Early, Benefit Forever
Dental habits formed in childhood often carry into adulthood. Parents who help their children establish good oral hygiene routines are giving them a precious gift – one that will benefit them for life. Children who learn to brush properly, limit sugary snacks and see dental visits as a normal part of healthcare are more likely to maintain these practices as they grow.
Core Habits for Lifelong Dental Health
Consistent Daily Care
The foundation of excellent oral health is surprisingly simple: brush thoroughly twice a day and use floss or interdental brushes to clean between your teeth daily. These basic habits remove plaque before it can harden into tartar and cause gum disease or tooth decay leading to fillings.
Careful Dietary Choices
What you eat affects your teeth long after the meal is over. In fact, we recommend not brushing for 30 minutes after eating because the acid in food temporarily weakens tooth enamel. If you can limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks (including those seemingly healthy fruit juices and smoothies), you can significantly reduce your risk of tooth decay. Always check the sugar content on food and drink labels – some might surprise you. Consider water as your default drink as it’s tooth-friendly and helps maintain good hydration.
Instilling good dietary habits in children and not letting them eat too many sweets will help their dental health enormously.
Regular Professional Care
Even the most diligent home care can’t replace professional dental check-ups. We recommend visiting your dentist every six months for examinations and professional cleanings. These visits catch potential issues before they become serious problems, potentially saving you discomfort and expense.
Adapting Habits Through Life’s Stages
Young Adults
As you navigate university, the start of your career and busy social lives, it’s important to maintain consistent dental care despite changing routines. If you’re sharing accommodation with others, keep your toothbrush and floss separate to prevent bacterial cross-contamination.
Middle Age
This is when previous dental work may need maintenance and when issues like teeth grinding (often stress-related) might emerge. Consider a night guard if you’re experiencing jaw pain or worn enamel.
Older Adults
Dry mouth from medications and increased sensitivity to gum disease require you to be extra vigilant and keep on top of dental checks. Staying hydrated and possibly using special mouth rinses can help manage these challenges.
Make Technology Work for You
Today’s dental technology can make habit-forming easier. Electric toothbrushes with timers help you brush for two minutes, while smartphone apps can help track your daily oral care routine. Water flossers offer alternatives for those who find traditional flossing challenging. Introducing new tooth tech into the house can be a great way to help others in your family improve their oral health routines.
The Reward of Consistency
The most convincing reason to maintain lifelong dental habits? They work. Our dentists can see the difference – those who commit to consistent care typically experience fewer dental emergencies, require less invasive treatments and maintain their natural teeth longer – often for their entire lives.
We are dedicated to partnering with you through every stage of your oral health journey. Whether you’re establishing habits for the first time or looking to improve your existing routine, our friendly team is here to provide personalised guidance and support.
